Preparing for Baby? Don’t Forget to Prepare Mum Too.
When you’re pregnant, there’s so much to think about.
You’re preparing the nursery, washing those tiny clothes, choosing prams, packing the hospital bag and making sure your little one has everything they could possibly need.
But there’s one very important person who can sometimes get forgotten in all the preparation…
Mum.
Your body is about to go through a pretty incredible physical challenge, and preparing your body for pregnancy, birth and those early months with your baby can be just as important as preparing everything else.
Your Body Is Preparing for a Big Workout
Pregnancy places a lot of physical demands on your body.
As your baby grows, your centre of gravity changes, your posture adapts and your muscles and joints have to work differently to support you and your growing bub.
Then comes birth, followed by the physical demands of caring for a newborn.
Think about everything those early days can involve, lifting, carrying, feeding, pushing a pram, getting up and down from the floor and spending plenty of time holding your baby.
Your body is going to be doing A LOT!
That’s why maintaining strength and movement during pregnancy can be such a valuable part of preparing for motherhood.
You Don't Need to Train Harder, You Need to Train Smarter
Pregnancy isn't the time to suddenly start pushing yourself harder or chasing fitness goals at all costs.
Instead, it's about maintaining movement, building appropriate strength and listening to what your body needs.
Regular exercise during pregnancy can help you maintain strength and fitness while supporting your body as it changes.
And remember, your pregnancy is unique.
The type and intensity of exercise that feels right for you can change throughout your pregnancy, so it's important to listen to your body and make appropriate modifications as you go.
Strength Can Help You Feel More Prepared
One of the things I love about strength training is that it isn't just about getting stronger for your workouts.
You're building strength that can support you through everyday life.
During pregnancy and motherhood, that might mean having the strength and confidence to:
Carry your growing baby
Get up and down from the floor
Lift and carry your baby and their belongings
Support your changing posture
Maintain your balance and stability
Return to movement after having your baby
It's not about having the "perfect" pregnancy workout. It's about helping your body feel strong, capable and supported.
Don't Forget About Fuel and Recovery
Exercise is only one part of looking after yourself during pregnancy.
Your body needs plenty of nourishment, hydration and rest too.
You're growing an entire human being, so this isn't the time to constantly put yourself last!
Eating nourishing foods, drinking enough water, getting adequate rest and giving yourself permission to slow down when you need to are all important parts of supporting your body.
You don't need to earn rest.
Sometimes the strongest thing you can do is listen to your body and give it what it needs.
Preparing Mum Is Just as Important as Preparing for Bub
As a trainer and a mum myself, this is something I'm incredibly passionate about.
We spend so much time preparing for our babies, but Mum deserves preparation and support too.
Staying active throughout pregnancy can be a wonderful way to maintain your strength, confidence and connection with your body while preparing for the changes that motherhood brings.
And the journey doesn't stop once bub arrives.
Postpartum is a whole new chapter, and returning to exercise should be a gradual process that takes into account your individual recovery, experience and needs.
At FYB, We’re Here for Mum Too.
This is exactly why I love helping mums stay active through pregnancy and beyond.
You deserve to feel strong, supported and confident in your body throughout every stage of motherhood.
So while you're preparing the nursery, packing the hospital bag and washing those tiny onesies… Don't forget to prepare Mum too.
Because looking after yourself isn't selfish, it's part of looking after your family too.
If you're pregnant or recently postpartum and would like support with staying active safely, get in touch with FYB. We'd love to help you find movement that feels good for your body and your stage of motherhood.
